New Choices . . . Strategies for Success

What is a Displaced Homemaker?
Someone who has been out of the workplace or underemployed, depended on another income, lost her/his means of support, and needs to become self-sufficient. Single moms, divorcees, widows, and separated persons usually fit into this category.

The core program called New Choices... Strategies for Success consists of 10 half days designed specifically to enhance self-esteem as well as to provide computer skills and develop resume writing, interviewing and job search skills. Modules are presented on career exploration, entrepreneurship, financial management, image and nutrition. The series runs five times during the year. Graduation and an opportunities fair with employers and training school representatives follow the last seminar. Additional hard skills training may be provided after individual employment counseling.

The Women's Commission also offers Adventures in Attitudes, a 4 or 5 day personal empowerment workshop covering communication, leadership, decision-making, problem solving and much more. The purpose is to help each participants get and keep a job. The annual graduation is a very special event held in October with participants serving as models in a fashion show. What better way to improve your self-esteem?

Customer Service for Displaced Homemakers provides entry level skills to obtain a job in a call center or similar environment. Classes include a personal style assessment, dealing with angry customers, and the EASE method of customer service as well as communication and interviewing skills. Placement assistance is an integral part of the entire displaced homemaker program.

Power Up! is a customized outreach program about communication skills and self-esteem. Any agencies interested in having such a program for their displaced homemakers, please call Ulinda Forehand at 336-4309.

The New Choices Resource Center and Clothing Closet are available to all women in transition. Job leads are provided from over 350 local employers. Computers are available in the Women's Commission to explore Internet job listings, develop resumes and cover letters, and use our computer tutorials.
